 3. History of Llewellyn

In the Beginning

Llewellyn Publications began as the Portland School of Astrology in 1901 under the leadership of Llewellyn George. An astrologer himself, Llewellyn George self-published a number of small astrological pamphlets before he published his first bestseller, The Llewellyn Moon Sign Book and Gardening Guide, in 1906. Published continuously since that time, The Moon Sign Book, as it is affectionately known, formed the backbone of Llewellyn for some time.

In 1910 Llewellyn George published his astrology text, The A to Z Horoscope Maker and Delineator, which became a classic and is constantly revised and updated, firmly establishing Llewellyn Publications in the astrology community.

In 1954 Llewellyn George died, and the company was purchased by a printer who ran it as a mail-order business. For sale again in the late 1950s, Llewellyn was purchased by current owner Carl Llewellyn Weschcke. He moved the small company to his home state of Minnesota and began the hard work of building a major publishing house. For the first eight years, the books which sustained Llewellyn were The Moon Sign Book and The A to Z Horoscope Maker and Delineator. The times did not support metaphysics, and experts predicted that astrology and occult interest would be dead issues before the decade passed.

The experts were mistaken. The surge of interest in metaphysics spawned in the late 1960s provided renewed interest in Llewellyn books. This interest, and subsequent capital, allowed Llewellyn to venture into broader subject areas. Although astrology will always remain a strong suit for Llewellyn, consumer demand dictated the addition of several new lines.

Growth and Diversification

Llewellyn's growth in recent years has manifested itself in both content and format. Along with a strong astrology line, Llewellyn prints books about natural healing, witchcraft, metaphysics and a new Spanish language series. They have also developed a line of annuals which include wall and desk calendars, The Moon Sign Book, The Sun Sign Book and The Magical Almanac.

The purchase of FATE Magazine in December of 1988 marked a period of growth for Llewellyn. The magazine was digest-size up until the June 1994 issue when this monthly publication, dedicated to exploring psychic phenomena and unusual occurrences, went full size. FATE Magazine now enjoys a subscriber base of 140,000.

The advent of a new decade (1990) also marked a new beginning for Llewellyn. The introduction of two new book lines -- The World Magic series and the How To series -- demonstrated the continued interest in self-help and personal transformation. In the same year, Llewellyn changed its corporate tagline to "New Worlds of Mind & Spirit," suggesting the forthcoming diversity of topics to be published.

In 1994 Llewellyn's consumer catalog, New Worlds, began selling on newsstands, increasing its circulation to nearly 200,000. While Llewellyn Publications has long been known as the Americas' oldest publisher of New Age sciences, it is perhaps more important that it be recognized for producing tools for transformation. Self-help and spiritual growth is what Llewellyn is all about.

7. Selection of Our Reviews of Llewellyn Books

Reviews of some of the books donated by Llewellyn appear in every issue of the acclaimed Baelder Journal. All the books are to be found in the Archives of the European Library. Here is just a very small selection of the great many books which have appeared in our Journal:

TEENWITCH: SilverRavenwolf  (Us$ 12.95 251pages. S-back. 1998. isbn: 156718725-0) This is book written especially for those teenagers and young adults who are interested in the art of Witchcraft. The flashy cover will certainly be appealing to young people. What about the content? The book begins with two introductions: one for worried parents and one for the teenagers. After these introductions there are roughly two main parts: the first explains the principles (ethical and occult) and the second is about the practice (spells, rituals about prosperity and abundance, protection). From a European point of view this book is typically American in the way it sells Magick and in the meanwhile teaches its young readers a moral lesson. The most important thing is that the lessons taught are valuable ones such Empathy with Nature, the uselessness of dressing up in order to be a witch and the ridiculous nature of curses. Therefore - regardless of the 'result-minded' Magick - this book is a nice introduction to the Pagan Way of Life.W

THE MIDDLE PILLAR : Israel Regardie  (Us$ 14.95 274pages. S-back . 1998. Isbn: 1-56718-140-6). This is the third edition of Regardie's book which first came out in 1938 and it was one of the first book with a psychological perspective on magic and practical occultism. Regardie postulated the - at the time - revolutionary idea about Magick being a possible part of psychotherapy. His idea is certainly not an uninteresting one as before Regardie Jung developed his analytical psychology in relation with the alchemical process of individuation. Not surprisingly Regardie devotes some pages to Jungian theory and its main elements such as the shadow and the archetypes. After the theory Regardie explains and describes some useful rituals for psychotherapy such as the performance of the Qabalistic Cross and the lesser Banishing Ritual. Although the Pagan will not find the rituals interesting, the link between Magick and Psychology is and starting from Regardie Pagan Magick can find a way to be accepted by the academic community.

THE SECRETS OF SEX MAGICK: Frater U: D: (Us$ 17.95. 222 pages. S-back. 1995 isbn 0-87542-773-1).. The author promises intensified and prolonged orgasms increasing the sexual magis, astral intercourse, boosting your sexual attractiveness and so on. As the author is a Kaos Magickian one should not expect a truly Western approach, but an ecclectic one. An important part of the book is devoted to Sex Magical Training as a preparation of the actual practises ranging from autoerotic to 'deviant' ones such as Sado-Masochism. At the end of the book there are some beautiful and evocative drawings. As we said before the writer's approach is an ecclectic one and thus the Western Pagan can find some useful exercises if he or she decides to practice Sexual Magick.W

INSIDE A MAGICAL LODGE : John Michael Greer (Us$17.95. 339 pages. S.Back. 1998. isbn 1-56718-314-X). Highly recommended for those who are thinking about joining or even founding a magickal lodge. In this book you will find information and data about the purpose, structure of the lodge and the framework of symbolism and ritual of the traditional lodge system. The author was a member of several lodge organisations (both fraternal and magickal) and he found a new lodge to explore the interface between lodge tradition and magical practice. However do not expect any secrets from existing lodges as this is not what the book is about. Nor will one find detailed magickal instructions. After a general history of the magickal lodge, the author describes how to construct a lodge, how its structure works in practice (ritual of Opening and Closing, Rituals of Athanor, Institution and Installation and so on). There are also some illustrations of ritual clothing, the temple etc.W

MODERN SEXMAGICK : Donald Michael Kraig. (Us$17.95. 378 pages. S/back. 1998. Isbn 156718394-8). In contrast to Frater U:D:'s book the author claims to present the reader true Western Sex Magick without too much Tantric theory. The author says his book is not a New Age one as his goal is to be logic and scientific. First one gets a history of Sex Magick from the Knight Templars onwards to the Kabbalah, the Swedish mystic Swedenborg, the English poet Blake, the Golden Dawn, etc. This is most interesting as to get a picture of occult history from different points of view: the world of the occult, mysticism and literature. After this you get physical exercises for the male and female genitals, working with talismans and Sex Magick for individuals, couples and groups. In the 9th chapter the author discusses 'the threshold of Sex Magick' which implies SM and bondage. The whole book is lavishly illustrated.W

THE MAGICK OF SEX : Melita Denning & Osborne Phillips ($6.95. 275pages. S/back. 1982. Isbn:0-87542-192-X). As the book we have just discussed this one deals with the Western Tradition. The aim of this one however is somewhat different as this does not focus on rituals or magick as such, but on the development of a mature relationship between two partners. The authors have the pure love and joy of the Troubadours in mind when they discuss extended lovemaking, the Mystical Kiss, Erotic Massage, Cosmic Awareness Intercourse and more. The practitioners of sex should 'learn to work with Sex at all different levels of relatedness in the body, the psyche and the spirit'. As such the authors plea for a rediscovery of sensuality, romanticism within the realm of lovemaking. Within this age of degeneration, loss of values, loveless and even animalistic sex this book contains a very positive and even Pagan (due to the need of the partners' mutual respect) message which is worth listening to.

GYPSY DREAM DICTIONARY : Raymond Buckland (Us$7.95 228pages. S.Back. 1999. Isbn:1-56718-090-6) This little book is about interpreting your own dreams by using Gypsy wisdom. As it says in the introduction we have to learn to pay attention to our dreams. The importance of dreaming and its huge significance has been pointed out by Jung and his school. The first 7 chapters consist of theory and suggestions about how to interpret your dreams and to take things further onto the astral plane. The main part is a dictionary in which various dream symbols are explained. For example the piano; if you see and hear one, it means that you will be going to a party. W

MAGICKAL,MYTHICAL,MYSTICALBEASTS : DJConway ($14.95. 260pages. S.Back. 1996. Isbn: 1-56718-176-7). Unicorns Centaurs Griffins Gargoyles, you find them all in this guide of fantastic creatures. In the time of myths and legends, these strange and fabulous beasts filled the tales of bards and faery' s. This guide describes the history, symbolism, appearance, associated traits and magickal abilities of over 200 magickal creatures. Every animal has at the end an evaluation of psychological and magickal attributes, wish is quit interesting. All animals are also very well illustrated with very beautiful designs. This book is written for people who really believe in the art of myths and legends, so they can use the energy of over 200 of these mythical animals to empower your magickal workings, rituals and potential for success. Man has been cut off form the animal kingdom for too long in his spiritual quest and awakening- it is time to reconnect and this book will help you.W

LORD OF LIGHT AND SHADOW : D.J.Conway ($14.95 227pages. S.Back. 1997. Isbn 1-56718-177-5) . This book is about the ancient mythology of many different religions, about the Pagan God, it describes the spiritual mysteries of mythology, different types of Gods, what their skills are, what their function was, it describes the myths and legends of the Tricksters (LOKI, RAVEN, MAUI,), Gods who loved (EROS, SHIVA, FREYR,), Warrior Gods (TYR, THOR, SHANGO, BRAN THE BLESSED,), and Magicians (MERLIN, ODIN,). There' s an explanation to recover the forgotten true God. This work is an union of the ancient mythology and modern life, how to unite them. It also tells about how to connect with the true God through meditation, the attributes that they used, their symbols and cross - references. In a society where the old banal stereotypes of masculinity are transforming into something fuller and deeper this is a useful resource.W

ANGELMAGIC : GeoffreyJames (£12.95 199pages. S.Back. 1997. Isbn 1-56718-368-9). This book is about the heritage of the, once by Christianity banned, magic of angels. Yet the subject of angels generally is also connected to the wider realms in Paganism with regards to spirit guides, fetches, power animals, totem beasts and son on. This book considers several parts of this magic: What are angels ?, Where are they coming from ? Are they real ?, How did they survived ?, The subject is one of the most important and highest kinds of magic of the occult, it has a range of rituals to study the art of angels with their incarnation of the elements and the universe. And there are more than hundred weird sources and over fifty magickal alphabets.W

EARTH DIVINATION, EARTH MAGIC : John Michael Greer ($12.95 224pages. S.Back. 1999. Isbn 1-56718-312-3). This book is a very practical guide to Geomancy, it's a western magical oracle that' s forgotten in time. It' s a very fast and easy way to tell the future, based on communication with the energies of the earth. It' s the least well-known method of divination, it' s one of the three major kind' s together with astrology and tarot. It' s a very illustrated. It contains the 16 figures and their correspondences in detail; how to cast and read the chart. It contains the origins, the spread and the meaning of Geomancy. It explains also the connection between the geomancy and magic, consecrating instruments, scrying and meditation. Also given are the sigils and talismans, and a medieval handbook of geomancy which is quit interesting. -Very good and interesting book- W

FEARY WICCA TAROT : Kisma K. Stepanich ($29.95 419pages. Box. 1999. Isbn: 1-56718-696-3). These Tarot-carts are based on Ancient Irish Faery tradition, that once was told by the ancient bards. It's a crossing between Irish mythology and faery Wicca. The Tarot includes book and deck. The deck exists out of 83 very beautiful cards based on the 4 elements: Air, Fire, Water and Earth. The book is a well instructed guide which gives you a properly explanation of the meaning of the cards which contains the meaning, the card description, oghams, alphabets and symbols, some of them contain a faery Lore. There' s also 4 special faery journey cards included to help you during your journey through the land of ancient Irish mythology. They symbolise sacred objects. -Very nice addition to a mythological collection.- W

EARTH POWER : Scott Cunningham ($9.95 153pages. S.Back. 1997. Isbn 0-87542-121-0). This is a book about not only what might be regarded as the easiest form of magic but also perhaps the most ancient and the most natural: the magick which opened our ancestors eyes as sentient beings and spurred them on to evolution and culture: magic of nature. It contains the elemental magic (Air, Water, Fire and Earth) and other symbols of nature like wax, sea, storm, trees, stones. This is the book for the magic for a better world, to respect the art of nature, to understand it' s magical powers. This book is concerned about simple, less complex magic. There are spells to involve the symbols of nature, it contains rituals and divination who are very well explained. W

W

IN PRAISE OF THE CRONE : Dorothy Morrison ($14.95 239pages. S.Back. 1999. Isbn 1-56718-468-5). Messianism denied the natural cycles of time in male and female. Particularly for the female where the wise woman or crone of pagan times became the evil witch or old hag and where the youth became a dictatorship to deny natural and wondrous stages of the entirety of female life. This book restores the balance. It celebrates post-monopausal femininity. It teaches many aspects of female spirituality, rebirthing of the self, creating a spiritual sanctuary, becoming the Crone and rituals, and other important themes. It also has a range of simple rituals for charging and enhancing aspects of the crone of women, and also a range of recipes for harmonising and healing different parts of the physical body during its periods of transition. Excellent appendices on: 1. stone us and their magical associations; 2. Herbs, plants, flowers and their magical associations; 3. magical outline work sheet; 4.magical symbols for feminine empowerment; 5.Goddess associations for the menopause. W

THE GODDESS PATH : Patricia Monaghan ($14.95 243pages. S.Back. 1999. Isbn 1-56718-467-7). This book makes for a practical reference to the subject of "The Goddess". For unlike the Messianic concept of "God" as a universal one-size fits all dogma needing to destroy all other forms, the Pagan definition and reality of the God and Goddess as an all embracing totality as an interacting synergistic bi-polarity expressing the pantheistic energies of the Eternal Oneness. So with the Goddess. She is all around us and is manifest in our lives and our traditions in many forms. This book will guide you through a variety of these forms from various pagan tribal traditions (e.g. Norse; Celtic; Indian; Egyptian; etc) . Each chapter has questions and activities, and contains an outline and description of the symbols, the myths and the meanings. The forms which are explored for each Goddess are the concepts and processes and stages of: thee Lover; the Crone; The Maiden; The Lover; the Daughter.

RUNIC PALMISTRY : John Saint-German  (206pages. S.Back. 2001. $14.95. Isbn: 1-56718-577-0). Palmistry is usually an art that has not figured in Northern Magic the great deal. But there's no reason why not. Irrespective of the fact that our ancestors would not recognise many of the usages we now have for the Runes, it is still valid, for a craft or a religion that does not evolve is doomed to extinction. And the Runes are not static they are on going, vibrant, alive and organic. This book takes you through the basics of Palmistry and then relates the traditional areas of the hand: Thor, Loki, Sif, Muspellheim, Odin, Hoenir, Bragi, Midgard, Nieflheim, Saga. It then divides the hand into Erda (earth) Freyr (Air), Loki (Fire), and Heimdall (Water). The various lines are correlated to Yggdrasil, Mimir, Freyr, Sif, Eir, Frigg. There are then the Norns threads and the branches of Loki, Nanna, and Fylgia. The chapters include: Introduction to the Runes, Brief history of the Vikings, 4 Elements of the Hand, the Fingers; Aspects of the Thumb; Territories; Yggdrasil; Norns, Rune magic, the Major and Minor Runes of the palm. This is a dynamic and informative addition to the modern development of our great Runic heritage .

ISBN: 1-56718-648-3)                     Witchcraft:L many of the witches say that it is (one of) the oldest religions, which goes hand in hand with shamanism, yet no clear evidence has so far been found for this statement. The origins of witchcraft are shrouded in the mists of time and there are many guesses and theories about its true origins. In this book the author also makes an attempt to reveal the true origins of this bizarre yet flexible religion and creative: the success of that depends on the reader,, but her arguments are presented. She stretches back to the ancient Dravidic religion of India and beyond; tracks back the Aryan and Celtic peoples and connect it with the Paganism we know today. The book is easy to follow, even for those who dont have such great knowledge about the history or religions. In the back there is an appendix with a 6pages time-line, which shows all the major events concerning the development of world religions and an extensive glossary.

The amount of people that made the shift from Christianity to some kind of Paganism has increased immensely in the last few decades and is still growing. Therefore it is no surprise that the wish to get handfasted (which is  the common name for a pagan wedding), has increased as well. It is unfortunate for those who have such a wish, that there are only a few pagan priests and priestesses who perform handfastings. As an alternative many people ask one of their friends to perform the ceremony, but then there comes another set back; how do you handfast two people? Fortunately the authors wrote this book in which they will teach you how you, or a friend of yours, can design and perform you own handfasting. It contains a huge portion of sample ceremonies of almost every pagan tradition and even examples of interfaith weddings. Very detailed and with loads of ideas this book is the perfect alternative for those who wish to handfast, but dont know how to do so.  Taking the step to have a handfasting brings immense joy and possibilities for life- as we have found for those for whom we have performed pagan weddings in Arktion.

PSYCHIC VAMPIRES: Joe H. Slate, Ph. D.     (243pages.   Soft Back.  2002.   £14.95 ISBN: 0-7387-0191-2)
Vampires, who doesnt know them? Fantasy! say many people, Fiction! shout others, but the different is actually true, vampires do exist! Although they are not the bloodsucking, bat-changing night crawlers searching for a victim as many movies picture them. No, psychic vampires, as they are named, are normal people who consciously or unconsciously steal energy from other people. They have no special powers and it is more disadvantage than an advantage, sometimes even dangerous for both vampire and victim.
After 20 years of study and research about the human energy system and the psychic vampires Dr. J. Slate wrote this book to reveal his findings. The book is highly interesting and clearly explains the several aspects of the phenomena psychic vampirism, including the history, the three most common manifestations of psychic vampirism, how to identify and counteract a psychic (vampire) attack and more. The only drawback is that the author uses a lot of scientific language and difficult words, which is actually a bit of a pity. But besides that, is it a fantastic book about an unknown phenomenon well worth reading!

Of course you first have to identify what your strengths and weaknesses are, but that is quite simple and done in not more than 15 minutes. The system divide the personality characteristics into 4 sections, each corresponding with one of the four elements; Earth (material), Air (intellectual), Water (emotional), Fire (intuitive) and Quintessence. The latter shows how well your personality is in balance. By answering 72 questions you can calculate how well each of the elements and the corresponding characteristics is developed within your character. Your magickal sign will be based on the two elements with the highest scores, so if your have air and water as the highest elements, you would be a Unicorn. But since everything has its counter side, your shadow-sign will be based on the two elements with the lowest scores. There where your magickal sign shows you which of your characteristics are well developed, your shadow-sign will give you insight in which characteristics you probably have to improve. Those who arent such geniuses in calculating or are just not so fond of it, can visit Llewellyns website which has a program that quickly calculate your Magickal sign and Shadow sign.

Each chapter is built up using the same pattern: Description of the deity - symbolism - history - literature - ways of invocation. Trobe explains how to meditate on the different forms to draw the energy forth that lies imbued in male archetypes and how each of these god's characteristics can be manifest in modern men. The partition of the book as well as the set order of discussion contributes to a very clear overview of each of the pantheons and its different gods. In so doing Trobe presents a book that may appeal to a wide range of readers
